Honeybears Pre-Season Prowess
The Chinchilla Honeybears took on Kingaroy West in a Pre-Season Friendly in Kingaroy on Saturday the 9th of February. The match was the Honeybears first of the season and they did not disappoint.
Annie Johnson was first to threaten the Kingaroy goal but blasted her shot wide of the goal. Justeen Kruger however did put the Honeybears ahead early in the first half after some good leadup play in the midfield Kruger’s shot from outside the box made its way into the bottom corner. Kim Priem made it 2-0 midway through the first half when the ball broke loose Priem made no mistake from close range. Sally Carroll made it 3-0 just before halftime after some good leadup play on the right wing from Priem, Heather Hardy was unlucky to see her shot come back of the post however, the ball rolled straight into the path of Carroll who couldn’t miss from close range.
Kingaroy did pull a goal back right on Half Time when they received a free kick on the edge of the Honeybears penalty area and they made no mistake rifling a shot into the top corner giving the impressive debutant goalkeeper Nikita Wilson no chance in the Honeybears goal.
The second half was much of the same with the Honeybears on the front foot and created some very good goalscoring opportunities early on but were unable to capitalise on their early dominance. However, the Honeybears extended their lead midway through the second half when Annie Johnson hit the back of the net from a well struck corner from Justeen Kruger. Bonnie Callaghan made it 5-1 after a mistake from the Kingaroy Goalkeeper presented Callaghan with an opportunity that was too good to pass up smashing in from close range. The scoring was completed with Annie Johnson grabbing her second of the game with a composed finish late on with the Honeybears winning 6-1.
Honeybears Coach Tim Taylor said “It was a much needed hit out before the start of the season and the early signs are promising. We dominated for large periods in the game and although we scored six we could have had a lot more. The pleasing thing for me was to see some of our younger players play well with Heather Hardy and Nikita Wilson making their debuts and were very solid. Unfortunately Nikita I too young to play for us in the regular season but she showed today that she has the quality to do so we were all very impressed considering she is only 12.”
The Honeybears will kick off their season in early march and Honeybears Captain Claire Valler said “I’m so proud of the performance today. The talk on the field was very positive and the youngsters Heather and Nikita were amazing. I’m really excited for the start of the season as we showed today even with a few players missing we have such a strong squad, I know it’s early and we still have to improve but we looked really strong all over the park”
