Honeybears squash Redbacks
The Chinchilla Honeybears took on Gatton Redbacks on Sunday the 10th of March,
looking to bounce back from a disappointing opening day defeat and got off to the best possible start after just 6 minutes when Justeen Kruger found herself clean through on goal finishing confidently. The Honeybears were dominating early on and didn’t take long to double their lead after a corner was swung in by Kruger, Nikola Stevenson tapped in from close range from a knock down from Annie Johnson. On 30 minutes Annie Johnson made it 3-0 with a goal of her own blasting in from a tight angle. The game was starting to slip away from Gatton who struggled to maintain possession against a determined Honeybears outfit. The Honeybears made it 4-0 when Gabby Hicks hit a long range shot that made its way into the bottom corner which was her first ever goal for the Honeybears. The first half scoring was completed when Kruger got her second of the game making it 5-0 to the Honeybears at Half Time.
The Second half started much the same with Gatton defending deep in their own half. It took the Honeybears until the 60th minute to find a way through a determined Gatton defence but when Claire Valler picked the ball up and drove at the heart of the Gatton defence then laid off a perfectly weighted pass for Kruger to run onto and complete her hattrick. Annie Johnson grabbed her second of the game finishing confidently from close range. It was soon to be 8-0 when Brooke Hardy scored the goal of the game after winning the ball back inside her defensive third, Hardy then took off down the left wing running the length of the field and charged into the Gatton penalty area and finished confidently into the corner. It was 9 soon after when Kim Priem was given too much time and rifled her shot into the back of the net. The Honeybears were then awarded a penalty which Sally Carroll stepped up to take and made no mistake making it 10-0. Kim Priem wrapped up the scoring adding two late goals to complete her hattrick with the Honeybears running away to a 12-0 victory over a shell shocked Gatton Redbacks.
Coach Tim Taylor said “Although it was a dominant performance there was still a lot of work to be done. Despite the big score line we still missed a lot of chances today. The first half was good but it took us a while to get going in the second half which is expected when you are dominating the way that we were. But we regrouped and finished very strongly.” “It was great to see Brooke Hardy and Gabby Hicks get their first Honeybears goal. They are both very talented young players and hopefully this will give them the confidence to really kick on this season.”
This weekend the Honeybears take on Highfields at the Rec Grounds on Sunday in a game that always has a bit of spice. Taylor said “This weekend will be tough against Highfields it always is. They have made a lot of changes this year with a new coach and some new players so they are a bit of an unknown, but I’m confident that we have the quality in our squad to really take it to them.”
